THE O MEARA CONNECTION
O Mearas Bar in High Street was a Legion stronghold for many a year. The O Meara family have a long and fabled history with the club with fear an ti Donie serving as Club Treasurer in the recent past. His brother Padraig moved to Sligo to set up home and indeed this writer has great memories of a trip to Collooney as a twelve year old and enjoying a weekend in the Yeats County. Both Donie and Padraig are both sadly departed but the O Meara connection in Sligo is still holding strong. Con , son of Padraig, is the current joint manager of Coolera Strandhill who caused a major ripple in Connacht in recently capturing the Club Championship. Con who lined out for Sligo for many years has now got Dublin kingpins Cuala in his sights with the All Ireland semi final on the first weekend in January. Not to be outdone brother Shane has his own All Ireland semi final to prepare for. He is the head coach of the Sligo All Stars and they will be facing UCC Blue Demons in the last four of the National Cup on Saturday January 11th in the Neptune Stadium.. It is the first time in Sligos history that they have reached the latter stages of the competition and we wish both Shane and Con well in their endeavours. With a bit of luck they may be able to at last compare their sporting CVs with their illustrious first cousin Michael Bernard O Donoghue.
