Aghada GAA Juvenile News
Hi folks, hope this newsletter finds you well. Our adult hurlers enjoyed a fantastic championship win against Midleton last Saturday and now take on Blackrock this Sunday in Cobh, where once again a large Aghada support would be really appreciated. Well done also to our junior B hurlers who also recorded a fine win against Lisgoold, hopefully we can build on this momentum, and it can be the catalyst for a very special year going forward in both codes. There is nothing like a match especially when it involves your own club, it can carry emotions to the highest pitch of elation one instant and then crash them down to rock bottom the next, supporting the team is what matters, whatever the outcome the feelings experienced in going to the match are the Greatest.
U15 Div 1 Football Championship Mayfield V Aghada. A slow start and a rousing finish catapulted our u15 footballers to an emphatic championship win away to Mayfield last Wednesday night. Mayfield surged into an early lead and were 2-4 to 1-1 up after the first 25 minutes with both our scores coming from the boot of corner forward Cormac Walsh after good inter link play with full forward Cian Moore. The introduction of Jude Devoy had the desired effect and he got into his stride quickly to pounce for 2 well worked goals and amazingly we went in level at the interval 3-1 to 2-4 a score line that stunned the home side such was their early dominance. We turned the game completely on its head early in the second half with our backs a lot tighter led by center back and captain Dara O’ Conchubhair ably assisted by Eanna Crowley, Cillian Falvey and Eoghan Walsh who was defending superbly with his timely interceptions. We hit a purple patch scoring 2-6 without reply as Jude with another goal after a slick passing move and center forward Isaac Oosthuizen also raising a green flag with a composed finish as white flags from Cian Moore, Tom Walsh and a mighty Josh McCarthy effort had us in the ascendancy. Mayfield responded with a goal and a few points, but we upped the gears once again to strongly finish. Cian, Tom, and Cormac with points as midfielder supreme Colm O’ Donoghue put the icing on the cake with the last score of the game and our sixth goal as we ran out convincing winners 6-10 to 3-6. Team & scorers Cormac Crowley, Eoghan Walsh, Eanna Crowley, Pierce Mcloughlin, Cillian Falvey, Dara O’ Conchubhair, Josh McCarthy 0-1, Sam McAllister, Colm O’ Donoghue 1-0, Tom Walsh 0-4, Isaac Oosthuizen 1-0, Fionn O Sullivan, Cormac Walsh 1-2, Cian Moore 0-3, Ronan Norris. sub used Jude Devoy 3-0.
Our u15 c-3 football side lost heavily away to Mallow in the league, we were severely depleted for a number of reasons in what was a tough learning curve for these young players but a big thank you to all the players who made themselves available and as they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and there will be better days ahead.
U17 P2 Football Championship Beara 1-15 :Aghada 3-7 report by Vince Rohan Our minor footballers played their second group game of the premier 2 football championship on Sunday afternoon in Brinny. Aghada got off to the worst possible start with the concession of an early goal inside the first minute. This coupled with two points from Beara appeared to have our lads in major trouble with less than ten minutes on the clock. However, as we saw in the hurling championship game last week, our lads dug deep and clawed themselves back into the game. A goal from Cian Hegarty and three points in a row from the Aghada forward line put us in front in the game. James Motherway with the pick of these scores after great work from James Hurley. Unfortunately for Aghada, Beara then went on a scoring spree of their own and by half time we found ourselves 1-9 to 1-5 behind. After the break, Aghada fought hard. Tomás Condon now operating at wing forward was working incredibly hard and his tenacity certainly gave Aghada a boost when he won a key turnover in the middle of the field. Aghada chipped away at the Beara lead and with ten minutes remaining had the lead back to the minimum. Seán Santos O’Sullivan, Fionn O’Callaghan and Conor Geary were now sweeping up loose ball for Aghada in the half backline with Robert Dean carrying the ball forward very well. Samuel O’Driscoll was now a constant threat inside full forward for Aghada with Hugh Mulcahy working very hard out around the middle of the field. Aghada huffed and puffed for the equalizer but couldn’t find it and when Beara extended their lead to two points that looked to be the game gone for Aghada. However, there was to be late drama with Seán O’Callaghan hitting a rocket of a shot off the post with the virtually the last kick of the game. Unfortunately, the ball rocketed out to safety and soon after the final whistle sounded. No joy for Aghada but a spirited second half performance. Best on the day were Tomás Condon, Samuel O’Driscoll and Evan Crowley. Speedy recovery to Fionn O’Connor who suffered a hand injury in the game. Attention now turns to the minor hurling championship vs Ballinhassig on Friday evening in Rostellan.
Its official! - our own Fergal ‘Rasper’ Condon was announced as a selector in manager Pat Ryan’s backroom team in the Cork senior hurling set up and we wish them all the best as they strive to bring Liam McCarthy back to Leeside in the next couple of years. No pressure Rasper!
Our u11 footballers enjoyed a great day out in Páirc Uí Chaoimh as they got a stadium tour by Cork senior football star Mattie Taylor and played 3 matches, a fantastic initiative enjoyed by players and mentors. Hopefully this is just the start of many more games at headquarters for these stars of the future.
The best of luck to Rachael Leahy, Kaitlin Smith and the Cork ladies minor football team who contest the All-Ireland football final against Galway in Nenagh this Wednesday night.
The very best of luck to Hannah Looney, Aoife Healy, Ali Smith and all in the Cork Camogie set up who play in the senior All Ireland final in Croke Park this Sunday at 4.15pm. Bring it home girls Rebels Abú.
