A League Division 1A

Donaghmore/Ashbourne v Trim in Ashbourne at 8pm Friday 24th March 2023.

Half Time Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-6 Trim 0-8

Full Time Donaghmore/Ashbourne 0-15 Trim 0-8

This was the proverbial game of 2 halves with a gale force wind blowing towards the town end which Trim certainly took advantage off by scoring some outstanding points from play with most coming from the boot of Alan Douglas. Trim were first to get on the scoreboard after just 3 minutes with a point from a free. Donaghmore/Ashbourne started the better and were unlucky not to put the ball in the back of the net with a shot from Evan O’Kane which flew across the face of the goals with just a minute on the clock. Andy Colgan got the homeside on the board with a well taken free off the ground against the wind. Andrew Tormey added a point from play before Andy Colgan converted again from a free kick when Tormey was taken down. Jamie Browne put the home side 4pts to 1 pt up from another free kick. Trim responded with 2 superb points from play from at least 40mtrs out. Leo Reilly made it 5pts to 3pts with a point from play. Trim made the most of the wind and went 8pts to 5pts up without reply. The visitors were driving forward but for good defending from our young full-back line of Evan Quinn, James Redmond and Oisin Daly things could have been a lot worse at half-time. Shaun Byrne was working hard with young Aidan Mackey holding his own on the half back line and Byran Menton solid as ever. Evan O’Kane made a great catch from the kick out and passed to Kevin Cully who looked like stopping the rot on 28 minutes but the wind took the ball and went to the right of the post but a minute later he made no mistake when he brought the homeside back to just 2 points apart on half time. Donaghmore/Ashbourne would be happy at half time considering the wind was such a big factor in this game.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne opened the 2nd half with a point from James Crumlish that most people could have missed it all happened so quickly from the throw in. Andy Colgan added his 3rd point on the night from a fine free. Tormey won a ball which he passed to Leo Reilly who made no mistake when firing over the bar and added another a couple of minutes later to make it 3pts for the night. Trim were finding it hard to get on the ball with the homeside playing keep ball and using the wind to their advantage when taking gaps left by a Trim team defending for the lives but eventually fouled which gave James Browne the opportunity to put a free over the bar from 20 mtrs out. Zach Thornton was introduced for Josh Lancaster and added a fine point to leave Don/Ash 12pts to 8pts up. Sean Curran who is just returning from injury came on for Evan O’Kane who didn’t look out of place in centre field. Michael Deegan also returning from injury came on the last few minutes for Dylan Brady and young Michael O’Sullivan was introduced for James Crumlish. Aaron McLoughlin was brought on for Andrew Tormey with the clock winding down. Shaun Byrne and Bryan Menton both scored points from play in the last 10 minutes before Jamie Browne wrapped it up with a free on 28 minutes. Trim failed to score in the second half. It finished 15pts to 8pts with the homside playing some good fast flowing football where the team worked really hard from defence into the scoring areas.

Don/Ash:- Andy Colgan (0-3 3f); James Redmond, Evan Quinn, Oisin Daly; Aidan Mackey, Shaun Byrne (0-1), Bryan Menton (0-1); Kevin Cully (0-1), Evan O’Kane; James Crumlish (0-1), Andrew Tormey (0-1), Leo Reilly (0-3); Dylan Brady, Jamie Browne (0-3 3f), Josh Lancaster. Subs: Zach Thornton (0-1) for Josh Lancaster 50m, Sean Curran for Evan O’Kane 50m, Michael Deegan for Dylan 52m, Michael O’Sullivan for James Crumlish 58m and Aaron McLoughlin for Andrew Tormey 58m.

Our 2nd Team A League Division 2B travelled to Nobber for an 8 o’clock throw in but while both teams were out doing the warmup it was decided that the match would be called off. It’s disappointing having made the long trip to Nobber on a Friday night.
