After a cagey opening few minutes this game burst into life when Eddie Nash with an astute pass found Padraig McKeever and he slotted a ground shot to the net to give Simons the lead on seven minutes. O Mahonys replied with a point from play a minute later. For the rest of the first half on a wet coldish Summers evening in June Simonstown tagged on four points from play with Tadgh Hanrahan (2), Brian McGrath and Jimmy Heaney on target to leave the Sky Blues leading at the break 1—4 to 0—2.
The defenders were on top due to the slippery conditions but further scores from Eddie Nash, Aaron Farrelly and a McKeever free put Simons 1-7 to 0—4 up at the end of third quarter. Another McKeever free and a point from Shane McEnery completed Simonstown tally. O Mahonys rounded of their evening with two frees. Final Score; Simonstown 1—9 O Mahonys 0—6. What a wonderful sight it was to see Shane Gallagher playing again in second half after four (4) years out with injury, work commitment's and travel.
The Seamus Heaney Cup was presented to Simonstown Captain on the night Jimmy Heaney---his grandson. The Cup game between Simonstown and O Mahony's is a yearly fund raiser for the Oncology Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda. The late Seamus played with O Mahonys and played and managed Simonstown teams. A special word of thanks to all for their generous contributions.
