Minor Boys v Baile Talún Minor League Division 1 Round 2

The Geraldines lined up on Friday night against BT with some excellent additions from the  Under 15 squad as injuries, holidays and other commitments saw playing resources reduced to bare bones.  Cian Spaight was a much-needed returning Minor player and played a major role in the result.

The Geraldines got off to a good start with quick smooth attacking play having Sean Mckenna on the end of a few nice moves; scoring a point and also with the ball in the back of the net with an excellent finish despite heavy contact from the defender, but the Referee had blown his whistle. The Geraldines had to settle for a point from the resulting free (C Lynch).

BT stepped up the pace and had some excellent scores and approach play getting 4 points ahead after 20 minutes frustrating the Gers attacks and forcing wides. M Dobros showed his long-range ability once again popping over a forty to bring the scores to Gers 0-3 and BT 0-6, but BT had their tails up and despite some excellent defending from Jack Greene and Ronan Duggan, BT kept working for the scoreboard.  BT had strong players across the pitch and tested the Gers. Under pressure for most of the half, the Geraldines lost cornerback Eoin Rodgers who went off injured  (broken collar bone) after showing incredible bravery in the tackle.

BT looked confident and secure going in at half-time 1-8 against 0-6.

The introduction of Noah Lauaki, Finn Madine and Mal Madine at halftime helped the Gers get into their rhythm and the attacking trio of Sean McKenna, Cian Spaight and Cillian Lynch (captain) clicked impressively. Excellent teamwork and support play saw the trio score 1-5 between them in the first 15 minutes of the second half to get within 2 points as they hunted down BT.

with Franek playing a stormer in midfield alongside Finn Madine, the Geraldines' work ethic started to pile pressure on BT and scoring opportunities kept coming despite numerous wides A vital goal chance fell to Cian Spaight with 3 minutes to go, who finished with style. The Gers were ahead for the first time since the 8th minute and showed admirable composure in defence and attack to build on that lead to 2 points with time up—a dramatic win for the Geraldines.

A quick poll of (allegedly) knowledgeable supporters for Man of the Match told the story. It wasn’t possible to pick any one player with everyone going home impressed with an impressive team display. This was echoed by Wayne Callan (Coach) who said “ Great team performance "

Final Result:

Geraldines 2-13 vs Baile Tuan 2-11

Scorers:

Sean McKenna 1-5
Cian Spaight 1-2
Cillian Lynch 0-4
M Dobros 0-2
