U16 Hurling Championship
Newcastlewest 2-16
Patrickswell 1-15

Last Monday (July 1st), we welcomed Patrickswell in our first match in the U16 Hurling Championship. The visitors converted two frees to take an early lead before a long range strike from Leon O'Flynn and two frees from Darragh O’Keeffe put us ahead. The lead changed hands once more with two Patrickswell frees. The game was finely balanced as the sides traded two more points (Darragh with a free for NCW) before a well placed pass found our Fullforward in acres of space. Ksawier brushed aside the tackle and fired a magnificent strike to the net. Significantly with 20 gone it was the last time the lead would change hands. The sides traded two frees each (Darragh for NCW) before Daniel McMahon on his U16 debut added two points from play. Just before the halftime whistle NCW went a man down with Patrickswell converting the resulting free.

NCW were up 1-9 to 0-8 at the break.

The message at halftime was to step up and work hard which the young magpies delivered in spades. Patrickswell started strong with 3 points (1f) before NCW took charge again with points from the dependable Darragh O'Keeffe (1f) and another two points from open play from young Daniel McMahon. A goal batted to the back of the net by Ksawier put 6 points between the teams. Noteable mentions to Tiernan Horgan in goals who kept the team honest pulling off some important saves, solid as ever in defense were Diarmuid Cremin (fullback) and Jack Horgan (6) and working tirelessly in midfield were Leon OFlynn and Darragh Liston. NCW pulled away with points from Darragh O'Keeffe (2f) Daniel McMahon and Jack Horgan. To their credit Patrickswell never dropped their heads finishing strongly with two pointed frees and a goal. Overall a massive effort from all our boys. Huge thanks to the lads from the U14 panel who slotted seamlessly into the U16 squad depleted with injuries and holidays. Thanks in particular to Kyle, Donnacha and Aidan from the U14 panel who made a massive contribution on the pitch and to Conor, Zach, Oisin and James as subs. Up next we have U16 Football Championship on Monday 8th v St Senans and Friday 12th v Knockaderry (both at home).

U16 Squad: Ksawier Bochnak (2-0), Diarmuid Cremin, Kyle Egan, Thomas Hanley, Jack Horgan (0-1), Tiernan Horgan, Darragh Liston, Daniel McMahon (0-5), Zach O'Keeffe, Conor Mullenger, Oisin O'Connor, James McCoy, Charlie Moore, Cormac Noonan, Max Normoyle, Leon O'Flynn (0-1), Darragh O'Keeffe (0-9,8f), Kian O'Keeffe, Donnacha Ryan, Cillian Shanahan
