PREMIER INTERMEDIATE HURLING
After an opening group defeat to Carrick Swans we bounced back with a healthy victory against Silvermines last weekend. An even opening period saw the teams tied at 3 points apiece after 10 minutes before Upperchurch scored 4 points in as many minutes to open up a gap. Silvermines scored a brace of points but we were quick to reply, notching the next 5 to go 7 ahead playing with the aid of the breeze. Silvermines finished the half strongest but still trailed by 3 points at the break. The 3rd quarter of the game was all Upperchurch as we outscored our opponents 1-6 to 0-1, Pat Ryan finding the net in the 38th minute. From there on it was a case of managing the lead, and despite a late Silvermines goal we still claimed an 8 point victory 1-23 to 1-15. We now face Ballina in the final group game on Sunday 25th Aug at 6:15pm in Toomevara knowing a victory will guarantee us a county quarter final spot. Defeat will see us finish 3rd in the group and mean we will play in the preliminary quarter finals.
INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Our intermediate hurlers were piped at the post by Carrick Davins in the county championship last week, being defeated by 1 point after a late Davins goal. We had a tremendous start with a TJ Butler goal from a penalty and 3 further points from play putting us 1-3 to 0-0 up after 15 minutes. Davins raised a green flag of their own but TJ Butler again found the net and we added 3 more points to have a commanding 9 point lead at half time. Davins regrouped at half time though and when they scored a goal early in the second half it sparked a fightback and by the midway point of the half they had reduced the margin to 1 point. Upperchurch steadied the ship with a few points and when Jim O'Dwyer goaled after 49 minutes we held a 5 point advantage. Carrick Davins scored the next 3 points to put them 2 in arrears and in injury time struck the final goal to take the victory 3-10 to 3-9. This means we will now finish bottom of the group and enter the relegation play offs. Our final group game is on Friday 23rd at 6:45pm in The Ragg against Moneygall.
