Adult Football Championship Matches Reports
Last weekend was one of mixed results with 2 wins ,a draw and 2 losses.
Seniors: Senior 1 Championship.
Our second match in our group saw us up against a very experienced Ballymun team who were boosted by the availability of county star James Mc Carthy who had his red card rescinded . The weather was near perfect in Parnell Pk.
We played against the wind in the first half . The first score came when we were turnovered when attacking and Mun got a point from the break .They got their second point after a poor kick out. Our first point from a free came from a 45m by Sean Parker . Mun got the next 2 points and despite plenty of possession when attacking we gave the ball away too often. The next score was in the 15th min when Luke Breathnach kicked a great point from play. Dean Rock kicked 2 points before disaster struck when our kickout was broken to Paddy Small who broke the tackles , carried at pace and from 25 m out hit a cracker into the corner of the net. Definitely must be in contention for goal of the year. Our next point came from Dave Deveraux having received a pass from Eoin Fitzpatrick who received a long foot pass from Jack Lundy .Bad luck struck in the 27th minute when our backs made a turnover and the ball fell kindly for Dean Rock to drill the ball along the ground into the net. A well taken point by Joe sweeney brought the score to 2-6 to0-5 at HT.
We started the second half in positive fashion and a free from 45 m was slotted over by Sean Parker followed by a great point from play from Eoin Fitzpatrick . However Mun got the next point before Ben Millist kicked a point to bring it back to 5 after 38 mins. A free from Luke Breathnach after 40 mins and a great point from play from Eoin Fitzpatrick followed, to bring it back to 4. While Mun got the next point, Jack lundy kicked a great point off his left from 35 m .It was back to 3 when Sean Parker kicked a 45. Sean parker then kicked a monster of a free from 50 m.to make it a 2 point game . However with Mun winning breaking ball from kick outs, that the nearest we got and they added 2 more points to win by 4 on a scoreline of 2-11 to 0-13.
Best for BSJ were Sean Parker in goal who kicked 4 points, Ben Millist, Jack Lundy, Joe Sweeney who worked very hard and Eoin Fitzpatrick who kicked 2 points and covered every blade of grass on the field.
The better team won on the day, with their county players in top form , obviously gaining from the extra weeks on club duties. The best of luck to Mun as they advance to the QTR Final having secured top spot in the group. For BSJ we go into our final game against Ballyboden where a draw will secure a QTR Final spot. However management and players will know that we need big improvements to get the result , a result that is achievable.
Next up is V Ballyboden Saturday 7th September in O Toole Pk at 3-15.
Inters . Junior 1 Championship
It was a windy Pairc de Burca on Sunday morning when we faced up to Kilmacud Crokes with memories of our last minute defeat in the semi final of the same competition last year still vivid in our memories.
Playing with the breeze, we kicked the first score a point from Joey Quirke but the young Crokes team hit back with 2 points in a row . We followed with 2 points from Joey and an excellent one from John Clair. Crokes came back with 2 before Joey and John responded with 2. After that we exchanged points but Crokes hit the last 3 points of the half to go in at HT leading by 0-9 to-07.
Indeed things looked ominous for us at the start of the second half when Crokes kicked the first point. Management made a raft of substitutions that brought improvements. Patrick Coleman one of the subs kicked 2 points before Crokes kicked the next point in the tenth minute. John Clair and Eoghan Seoige kicked points to bring it level but we hit a barren spell between the 40th and 50th minute when Crokes kicked 3 points to go 3 up. However we produced an outstanding last 10 minutes with 2 points from frees and then the only goal of the game. It came from a swift passing movement involving Paddy Quinn Glennon Shane Mc Cann for Joey to finish to the net . The next score a point was a great score, when Johnny Quirke won the ball , broke the tackle, carried at speed , laid off to his brother Joey who turned his man to put it over the black spot. Crokes introduced fresh legs and we were under pressure. But as always ,old heads come into play to see it out. In that regards Shane Mc Cann came out to midfield for kickouts and his breaking of the balls were accurate to endure we maintained possession. The final score , a point was a free from John Clair. Final score 1-13 to 0-13
An excellent game of football by two teams going at it with full endeavour. Best for Johns were Dermo Kennedy at full back who had a real traditional one on one battle with a big younger Crokes full forward, Finn Nolan, Naoise Cronin, Jack Kennealy, the evergreen Shane Mc Cann, Joey Quirke and John Clair. However all players must be commended for the manner we fought for this win.
We have now qualified for a home QTR Final but management will be looking to keep the players on their feet when we meet Round Towers Clondalkin away on Sunday 8th September at 11-00
Junior A. Junior 2 Championship
Following on from our impressive win in the first round against Naomh Barrog we faced Round Towers Lusk who were also winners of their first round game. Coincidentally they were in the same group as us in 2023 and they won by a point. So all indications were that this will be another close game.
We were 7-3 up at halftime.
We played very well for most of the game. Everyone worked hard and the fitness levels were good.
Defence was solid and put good pressure on without conceding many frees.
3 well worked goals from Joe Woulfe, Lughaidh Lynch & Cathal McGarrigle in the 2nd half helped us pull away and secure a quarter final spot. Final score 3-12 to 0-10.
The 5 lads off the bench had a great impact again most notably Cillian Gibbons who’s only out of Minor.
Oisín Cronin, Eoin Hoctor, Kevin Power, Joe Woulfe, Míchael DeFaoite, Mark Erdis & Lughaidh Lynch with 1-8 stood out.

Junior C: Junior 5 Championship
As stated in the last report this was an additional team put into the championship to accommodate all the players and give them a chance to experience adult football .
In our second championship match on Sunday afternoon we were away to O'Tooles. Playing against the wind in the first half BSJ trailed by 2 points at the break. The second half was point for point with good scores from Sean Murphy and Shane McGreevey. OTooles got a goal to stretch their lead to 5 points however BSJ came back well and got within a point before OTooles finished strongly to win out 1-11 to 0-10. Best for BSJ were Jerry de Faoite, Shane McGreevey, Sean Murphy and Shane Sheridan.
Well done to management and players who now go into their last match V Ckilmacud Crokes on Sunday 8th in Silver Pk at 3-00 pm
Junior B: Junior 6 Championship
Following on from a comprehensive win against St Annes in the first round, the Junior B team faced Crumlin in the second round of the Junior 6 Championship.
We went ahead early in the game by 2 points ,care of the excellent marksmanship of Collie O Donnell and Cian Duffy. Collie was being tightly marked by a Francie Bellew type corner back and did well to squeeze off a score. Crumlin responded with a well worked goal. Cian Duffy brought his shooting boots and rattled off the next 1-2 with a cracker of a point off his right and a well taken goal. Crumlin stayed in the game and worked hard to keep with Ballinteer and chipped away with points. Crumlin’s wingbacks caused problems for Ballinteer with their strong running. Billy Davoren was made work for his scores and notched up 0-2 before the break. Johnny Gillick was lost to injury ten minutes into the game and sought pain medication in the form of a pint of Guinness later in the evening. Conor Murphy came in for Gillick and immediately caused Crumlin problems. The midfield partnership of Shay McCaffrey and Eoin Byrne worked very well and kept Ballinteer moving with well won kickouts and strong running. Ciaran McCabe caused problems down the wing with his strong running intelligent play throughout.
Ballinteer went into the break with a 2 point lead but would be up against a strong breeze for the second half.
The second half began well with the midfield partnership of Eoin and Shay combining to win the throw in. Crumlin came back on the attack and an effort for a long range point looked to be going over the bar but dropped into the goal. Goalkeeper, Alex Gallagher won’t be getting any slagging after that one. Following this, Conor Murphy found himself bearing down on goal following a well worked passage of play and buried the ball to the top right corner. Crumlin kept working and chipped away at Ballinteer with some well worked points. Colly O Donnell again popped up with an effortless point and again Billy Davoren getting another 2 points in the second half. Ballinteer lost Shay McCaffrey to a bad injury as he went over on his ankle and Eoin Byrne to a knee injury. The two lads were badly missed but Ballinteer battled on. Crumlin edged ahead by a point as the game came down the straight but Cian Duffy levelled the game with a well taken free. Opportunities fell to Billy Davoren for points late in the game but the wind had other ideas. Cian Duffy had a good opportunity to edge ahead also but felt he had scored enough earlier in the game and put his effort wide. Special mention for Collie Egan on his comeback who held his own in the backline. The game finished level at 2-10 apiece. This was a hard fought draw and well done to the whole team on digging deep.
Best for Ballinteer St Johns were Ciaran McCabe at wing back, the midfield partnership of Shay and Eoin, Cian Duffy with 1-4, Collie O Donnell and Billy Davoren in the forward line. Best wishes to our injured lads, Shay, Eoin and Johnny Gillick, hopefully the injuries won’t keep you out for long.
Next up is Ranelagh Gaels on 8th September in Bushy Pk at 3-00 PM. With a Qtr final place secured they will be looking for a win to get home venue
