Round 6 SFC and JFC Results

Under the floodlights in Killucan on Friday evening we played the final group game of the junior championship. The Downs started the scoring with a point from Shane Carroll after 3 minutes. Killucan then took the lead with two fine strikes from frees from wing forward Conor Borthwick. However, The Downs took control of the half from there on out and led by 0-7 to 0-4 at halftime. The second half followed in similar fashion as the first and by the 50th minute we led 0-12 to 0-7 with Ben Harte deadly accurate from the placed ball on the night continuing to punish Killucan’s indiscipline.  Killucan rallied in the closing stages but our lads stood firm and were unlucky not to register a green flag on a numbers of occasions.  This result earns us a place in the knockout stages on a score line of The Downs 0-14 Killucan 0-9. Well done to all. We now look forward to a quarter final next Sunday against Bunbrosna in Shandonagh GAA at 12 p.m. All support appreciated.

On Sunday evening in TEG Cusack Park, it was the turn of the seniors to qualify for this year’s Shay Murtagh Senior championship and that they did courtesy of a two-point win over our near neighbours Killucan. In what was always going to be a tense affair with the losing team exiting the championship, it was the black and ambers to come out on top and march on in this year’s championship against Athlone next weekend. The Downs started the brightest and despite dominating possession in the opening half were only ahead by the minimum at the break on a score-line of The Downs 0-06 Killucan 0-5. The second half was an even cagier affair with scores at a premium. We had our chances to put the game to bed but unfortunately it came right down to the wire with our lads just about holding on to manufacture a two-point win propelling them into the knock out stages next weekend. Congratulations to all involved.

Senior Ladies Result

The Downs Ladies travelled to Milltown this Thursday for Round 6 of the Village Barn Senior Championship. In a physical game, The Downs had their fair share of possession throughout. However, they just failed to convert this into scores. Milltown ran out winners on a final score of 1-10 to 0-6 .The Downs now look forward to the final round of the Championship, a rematch of the League Final v St Joseph’s next Thursday.

Underage Results

The U12 boys finished off their league Phase 2 on Friday evening with the black squad playing in The Downs against Garrycastle and the amber squad away from home against Killucan. Both teams have made excellent progress throughout the year with many highs and lows in a huge amount of games. Well done to the players and their coaches on a fantastic season’s work.

Both U14 squads were also in action in the penultimate round of their championships. The black squad were up against a gallant Lilliput Gaels while the amber squad were at home to Caulry. The black squad try as they might just came up short while the ambers put in a magnificent performance (particularly in the first half) to come out with a plucky win against Caulry. Both teams have qualified for the knock out stages of their respective competitions with finer details to be confirmed.

Our Minor Boys concluded the group stages of the Minor Championship away to Tubberclair on Thursday night. They came up short, 7-15 to 4-8, against a strong team who are the current Minor Division 1 League champions.
It was a great workout and preparation for the boys for the up and coming knock out phase of the minor championship. Finishing 3rd in their group, they are now looking forward to a home quarter final.

LGFA Underage Results

Our U16 girls were away to Athlone last Tuesday evening in the final round of the group stages of the Division 3 championship. The girls came out second best to a strong Athlone side with the home side dominating events from the off. Despite the loss we still qualify for a quarter-final at home to Ballycomoyle on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. All support welcome.

Our U14 girls have a big week ahead of them with two final places up for grabs. The Division 2 team take on Cill Óige on Thursday evening at 7 pm at home while our Division 5 side face Tyrellspass in their semi-final on Saturday at 2 p.m. We wish all the players the very best of luck.
