Upperchurch Drombane GAA are saddened to hear of the passing of Billy Mahoney. Billy was a lovely man and a very stylish hurler who lined out for the parish in the 1955 & 1957 mid no 1 junior finals against Thurles Sarsfields, with the latter being described by the Tipperary Star at the time as one of the greatest junior finals ever. Billy also represented Tipperary, winning a Munster final medal in 1954 and playing at midfield in the All Ireland final defeat to Dublin, while also lining out for the Tipperary junior side 3 years later. Billy moved to Dublin and had a long career in the gardai and continued his hurling career with Young Ireland's there, claiming a senior county medal in the mid 1960s. Despite being away he always maintained his connections with the parish. Upperchurch Drombane GAA would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of Billy.
