INAUGURAL MICHAEL KELLEHER TOURNAMENT 🏆

We are hosting a new yearly tournament tomorrow in Caherlag in memory of Michael Kelleher, a young member of Erin’s Own who lost his life tragically in the 1960s.

Michael’s family have kindly donated a trophy to the club in order for us to help them honour his memory.

The tournament will begin tomorrow in Caherlag at 3pm and all support is greatly welcomed.

Here is a few words about Michael, from his brother, John.

Michael Kelleher
My brother Michael was born in 1951, and we grew up firstly at Annmount, Glounthaune and then at Dunkettle.   We both attended Glounthaune Primary School and began playing Hurling & Football with Erins' Own.

Our Mother Margaret was keen on Gaelic games, as she had played Camogie with Leeside as a young woman.

By 1965 both of us were students at Sr. Finbarr's College, Farranferris, which had a strong tradition of Gaelic games.

On that fateful night in August 1965, both of us played a hurling match on the under sixteen team in Midleton, in which Michael scored a goal.

A couple of hours later he was dead, knocked off his bicycle by a car as he cycled home near where "The Island Gate" restaurant now stands.

I came upon the scene as a crowd gathered and an ambulance had been called. I had to identify him later at the North Infirmary Hospital.

It was a terrible blow to all the family, especially our Mother, who never fully recovered from it.  She had reared the three of us, including our younger sister Marie, on her own after being widowed at a young age.

Our sincere thanks to Erins' Own for honouring Michael's memory.
John Kelleher
