Losing two of your starting XV during the warm-up is never a great start. But, how this team reacted to that, set the tone for this mornings game against Nenagh Ormonde RFC.
Thurles playing into the clubhouse missed a penalty kick which led to Nenagh scoring their first try.  Thurles replied with a try by no. 8 Paudie Kavanagh, Nenagh scored again quickly from the kick off. But Thurles replied through Oscar Ryan for another 5 pointer. Leaving the score at 12-12 after minutes. Nenagh ran in another 2 converted tries, before half time, leaving the score 26-12 to Nenagh at the break.
In the second half better defence from Thurles put Nenagh under pressure, when in possession, this led to a few turn overs in favour of Thurles and Thurles scored first after the break with a second try from Paudie Kavanagh after some excellent ball carrying and rucking from both backs and forwards. Nenagh again replied with a from a 5 metre penalty, to extend their lead back out to 14 points.
Abdel Hinnawi, scored Thurles’s 4 try, again after some excellent teamwork combining both forwards and backs.
With roughly 10 minutes remaining and still trailing by 7 points. Daniel Groome was well positioned to gather a kick over the top from the Nenagh out half. From his 10 metre line he decided to run. And didn’t stop until he crossed the Nenagh tryline, placing the ball underneath their goal posts, after stepping and fending off 4 opposition players.
The conversion from Dara Burke levelled the scores at 33-33 . With five mins. remaining Thurles were awarded a penalty close to where the 15 meets the Nenagh 22. Again Dara Burke converts bringing his total to 11 points and the final score to 36-33.
Everyone that togged off, played a role in todays win and outstanding for Thurles were Jack Groome, who replaced one of those injured in the warm-up, Conn Fogarty Captain for the day and led from the front, Paudie Kavanagh who not only scored 2 tries but tackled anything that came his way.
Speedy recovery to all that picked up injuries today.
