U15 Hurling League fixture vs Lucan Sarsfields:

With almost perfect conditions for hurling, St. Finians U15 assembled in the Valley for their final home game of this league campaign against Lucan Sarsfields. For various reasons the team was reduced to the bare minimum 15 players for this match. Of those assembled, a few had to contend with knocks and ailments even before the throw-in, meaning this game was in the balance from the start.

Knowing that each and everyone of them had to play the full 60 minutes, the lads spoke about working for each other, tight marking, clear communication and not giving the opposition any comfort whatsoever on the ball. They committed to chasing the 1% every time - even if there is only a 1% chance that what they do will make a difference to the outcome of the game, they will do it. 💪💪

The game got underway and Finians racked up a score of 1-4 unanswered points. However Sarsfields weren't here just to take part and they got themselves back into the game including a second goal right on the stroke of half-time.

With a score of 1-10 (13) to 2-3 (9), the second half got underway. We had a few scares over the next 20 minutes or so when a number of Finians players went down, some following challenges that subsequently drew a card from the ref. Without subs, any one of these incidents could have spelled disaster for Finians but huge credit to the lads, they got up and back in the game up everytime. 👏👏

As the clock ticked down with the original 15 Finians lads still battling on, Lucan were clawing their way back, chipping away at our lead. With 5 minutes to go, Lucan scored a point to bring the score to within 1 point of Finians, much to the delight of their supporters. They then found themselves in a scramble in front of our goal with a number of chances but thanks to heroic defending, they were left frustrated as they failed to convert. Finians broke out with a strong run up the wing despite the 55 minutes of work already on the legs. In an effort to stop the Finians charge, a Lucan player committed an offence that received a straight red from the ref and with that their chances of making a dramatic comeback ended.

With a final score of 1-14 (17) to 3-7 (16), the 15 tired but happy Finians lads left the Valley for the last time in this league as U15 hurlers.
