Oíche Shamhna
Next week we celebrate Oíche Shamhna, the beginning of the season of Samhain, an ancient Irish tradition going back thousands of years, long before the Celtic period.  From Samhain, the days had become shorter, nights were longer, darkness prevailed, allowing the spirits of the dead to roam free, so people adopted various customs at this time of year to engage with the spirits of their ancestors.  Bonfires were lit, children dressed up as dead people and various games were played at home, such as blind man’s buff, hide-and-seek, also fun games such as snap apple, an t-úll sa bháisín were played.  An Báírín breac played a big part in Halloween celebrations, before health and safety regulations spoiled the fun.  The báirín breac cake contained hidden symbols such as a ring, a small piece of cloth  or a stick.  The person who got the ring in their slice of cake would get married next year, the other symbols were less cheerful.  Pumpkins and trick-or-treat are recent imports from America in the age of TV.
Mar sin bainigí taitneamh as Oíche Shamhna, fanaigí slán agus bígí cineálta dá chéile.
