This past week has been a memorable one for Croagh/Kilfinny GAA. Reflecting on our 1st County Intermediate Hurling championship win and the celebrations, the joy and emotion that the win has brought to our parishioners. It's been a long time coming but we are very fortunate to have a unique group of players that have dedicated all their time and effort to playing for our club. They have got their reward finally after 3 final losses in a row at this grade.
The players did their hard work in the gym and on the field but this win would not have happened without the support of the people of Croagh, Kilfinny and outside the parish. To the people that support our fund raising efforts, the parents that take our future hurlers to training and matches, to the coaches and management of all our teams, to the people who go to the games to support the teams, to our sponsors, former players and committee members, people no longer with us that kept our club going through the years, the people who cut the grass and wash the jerseys, you are all part of this win.
"It takes a parish to win a championship"
It took us 121 years to get to Intermediate grade (and we are not finished yet!) and it was fitting in a week that also marked the 140th anniversary of the foundation of the GAA.
On November 1st 1884 a small group gathered in a hotel in Thurles to set forth their vision for a unique Irish sporting identity. They did not know it then, but the dream unleashed in Hayes' Hotel by Cusack, Davin and their colleagues would go on to inspire millions and engulf the nation.
