Great news from Galway City Council has seen a 52% increase in evening active participation and sports in the last 5 days alone at Merlin Woods City park at Doughiska village. Following representations from local councillor Alan Cheevers the council have now turned on the sports lighting at the astro soccer, tennis, athletics and basketball area every evening until after Easter from 6pm to 10pm. Residents and women in particular have reported to club members the safety, community and security benefits already flourishing from this new initiative. So keep walking , jogging, participating longer now at Merlin Woods City Park.
Thanks to Dan Hurley of the Doughiska, Roscam, Ardaun (DRA)community development organisation based at ARD Cumasu family resource centre for the idea and work and to Cllr Cheevers for the representations to council on this innovative solution to enhance safety and enjoyment longer at the sports hub at Doughiska.
The clubs will continue to monitor usage and benefits over the next few weeks.
