Weekend Adult Football Match Reports.

It was another good weekend for Adult Football when we won 3 out of our 4 matches

Seniors : AFL 1.

Our first mid-week match  of the season resulted in our first loss. In what was a lacklustre  performance  we lost to St Sylvesters who fully deserved their 1-13 to 1-9 win.

Our weekend game was against our neighbour Ballyboden St Endas  which brought a big crowd to Marlay PK. We played with the hill and a slight breeze in the first half and while we had a good percentage of possession, 3 wides and 2 balls into the keepers hands resulted in us waiting until the 10th minute for our first score , a point from a free. Boden followed up with a point and then in the 11th minute  from a break from the Boden defence we conceded a goal . The next 15 mins yielded only 3 points from frees for us  before Jack Lundy hit a our first score from play, an excellent point from 35 m on the right side. We went in 1-4 to 0-4 down at HT.

The second half was a great display of attacking football especially in the first 15 mins. Our first goal came from a delivery from Luke Breatnach to Tom Aherne who broke the tackle and from 10 metres out on his left side and  with his left he buried the ball into the right hand corner of the net. Donnacha Carey followed up with a good point before we got our second goal. We got a great turnover on our own 13 metre line  by Liam Smith and Joe Sweeney broke quickly before delivering  a long ball into Ronan Cullen who was fouled in the square. The resulting penalty was expertly put away by Jack Lundy.  The next 5 minutes saw us add on a further 3 excellent points from play from Luke Breatnach , Oisin Grady and Dave Deverouix. That put us 7 up with 20 mins gone in the second half. However Boden replied with a goal . A great block in our square by Ronan Cullen saw the ball break kindly for the Boden lad to punch to the net.

Both teams exchanged a brace of points before we got our third goal . A hard won free on Boden 40 m line by Dave Devereux was delivered into Luke Cullen who moved in from the right and while his first shot was blocked, he buried the rebound. A further 2 points from play put us 9 up . However Boden finished with 1-1 in injury time to leave 5 points in it at the end on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-7.

A satisfactory outcome especially after our mid-week performance. Best for BSJ were Ben Millist, Jack Lundy, Tom Aherne , Luke Breatnach and Oisin Grady. So after 6 games we are joint top of Division 1 with Na Fianna and Thomas Davis.

Our next game is against Thomas Davis on Tuesday 3rd May in Kiltepper at 7-15

Inters AFL 4
The Inters had an impressive mid-week win over St Marks on scoreline of 2-16 to 1-9.
Our Saturday match pitched us with against equally high performing Thomas Davis in Killtipper ,which is always a hard place to get a result.
As it turned out we  were unlucky to lose out in a hard fought game . BSJ got off to a good start when Joey Quirke opened the scoring with a great point from play in the first few minutes. This however proved to be the only score we registered in the first half. Thomas Davis were a physically strong team  and we found it difficult to create any chances. Thomas Davis took a 6 point lead at half time on a scoreline of 7 points to 1.
The second half proved to be a much different affair, BSJ put Thomas Davis under way more pressure and managed to get some good turnovers and kicked a couple of points at the start of the half. Andrew O Reilly scored a brilliant goal and this now just left 3 points in the game .
BSJ put the ball in the net again when Shane McCann got on the end of a great move to palm the ball to the net, however from a distance of 40 yards away the referee gave a square ball decision against us, which proved to be crucial in the end. BSJ did manage to get another goal that their play deserved  when Jack Long rounded the keeper and the sides were now level. Thomas Davis managed to get out of their half and kicked 2 points  and try as we might we could not get this back. The slow start to the game and the disallowed goal really cost us but we showed great fighting spirit in the 2nd half and were unlucky to lose out on a scoreline of 2-4  to 12 pts.  Despite the defeat we are still in the top 4 with plenty to play for.
Next up is a home match V O Dwyers on Wednesday 8th May with a 7-15 throw in.

Junior A AFL 8
The Junior A team bounced back from a loss against Clontarf by comprehensively beating Ballymun in their mid-week game on a scoreline of  3-18 to 0-7.
On Sunday we took on St Brigids in Russell Pk.  The match was played on a tight pitch with a cross field wind which was not inducive to quality football and so it turned out. While we were 3 points to one up after 5 mins we kicked numerous wides and the ball into the full forward line was poor. This resulted in us going 10 minutes without scoring. However two excellent points from Cathal Morrisey and Lughaidh Lynch put us 7 to 2 up at HT.
Our performance improved in the second half playing up the hill and while Brigids scored the first point of the second half we followed up with a point  from Lughaidh Lynch and a free from Cathal Mc Garrigle. Brigids brought it back to 3 points 9 to 6 half way through the second half.  We kicked 3 of the next 4 points before a great individual point came from Conor Budd who carried the ball 30 metres up the left wing and slotted it over with his left. Our first goal came from an excellent movement with Sean Dunne laying the ball off to the young Thomas Sheridan who buried it to the net. We went 1-11 to 0-8 up before we got the score of the game. Cathal Mc Garrigle who previously missed a 20 metre free in front of the goal, collected the ball 35 metres out from the Brigid’s goal ,and despite been  pursued by 2 players he advanced towards the  20 metre line before beautifully lobbying the advancing keeper. It was a goal that his fellow Offaly man, and one of the greats of Gaelic Football, Matt Connor would be proud of.  Final score 2-12 to 0-8. Best for BSJ were Nathan Lhuiller in goal who dealt very well with difficult high balls into the square, Gavin Fahy, Andrew Ahern Lughaidh Lynch, Thomas Sheridan , Conor Budd and Cathal Mc Garrigle.
These 2 excellent wins puts us  up to 5th in the table.
Finally congratulations to our great stalwart  Sean Gildea and his wife Maud on the birth of their first child Mallaidh .
Next up is a home match V Shankill on Tuesday 7th May with a 7-15 throw in

Junior B . AFL 11

Our Junior B  footballers made it 5 wins from 5 with victory over neighbours, Ballyboden St. Endas on Sunday.

It was a sluggish start for the team but with the aid of a strong wind eventually settled down. The Ballyboden kickouts struggled to get past man mountain Eoin Byrne in midfield and that coupled with strong running from John Gillick laid the foundations for a flurry of scores. A fresh faced George Walker opened the scoring and within the first 20 minutes all 6 forwards had scored with six (6) from play coming from Cian Duffy. A scruffy aul goal from Billy Davren meant a healthy half time lead but as he’d no doubt say himself, they all count.

DJ Corbett had to leave the field with badly injured pride after a series of misses and our hosts very graciously allowed all subs to be played and they all took to the field with real zeal. Brian Monahan continued his scoring run with a number of points. Goals from Conor Murphy and Mark O’Reilly-Murphy rounded off a great performance. Final score BSJ 3-21 Ballyboden 0-2

An interesting statistic  to finish with. Our scoring difference hit a positive 100 points as a result of this win which is the highest of all 192 adult football teams playing in Dublin.

Naomh Olaf are up next on Thursday  the 9th at home.
