Last week was a great week for Adult Football. We won 6 , drew 1 and had one conceded to us in our 8 games.

Seniors AFL 1

In our mid-week game we got a credible and deserved draw against Thomas Davis in Kiltipper , a venue that is always difficult  to get a result from. It was 1-9 each with Thomas Davis getting the equaliser from a free with the last kick of the game.

On Saturday we were in the beautiful setting of Marlay pk on  a beautiful evening for our match V Castleknock who were hit hard with injuries. We were 3 points up after 5 minutes before Knock got their first score, a point. We however missed 2 one on one goal chances in the first 10 minutes. The next 10 minutes we kicked 7 of the next 9 points. These  included excellent points from great movements from Mark Mc Nally, 2 from Jack Lundy and a 45 from Luke Breatnach.  At HT the score was 0-9 to 03 to BSJ.

While Castleknock kicked the first score of the second half we reeled off 3 points in a row, the best coming from Seamus Fenton.  So after 10 mins of the second half we were in the driving seat 0-12 to 0-4 up. The first of our goals came when Liam Smith broke from the half backline and in a three man movement he was at the end of the movement to finish to the net. On the 15th minute Jack Lundy receiving the ball 20 metres out from a Castleknock mistake and instead of taking the easy option of a point lobbed the keeper who was off his line. It was 2-14 to 0-6  after 45 minutes before we got our third goal. Mark Mc Nally broke up the right wing , laying off to Ronan Cullen who laid off to Tom Aherne who squared to  jack Lundy to finish to the net. Both teams got a brace of points to finish on a scoreline of 3-18 to 0-9 in favour of BSJ.

Best for BSJ were Liam Smith, Mark Mc Nally, Luke Breatnach , Oisin Grady and Jack Lundy who scored 2-5.

So it was 2 completely different types of games. The Thomas Davis game  was tight and tough while we were never really threatened by Castleknock So after 8 games we are proudly top of AFL 1 at the half way stage of the league .

Next up is St Judes in Tymon on Tuesday 21st May at 7-15 , followed by a home match V Clontarf on Saturday at 6-30.

Inters AFL 4

In our mid-week game we scored a critical home win against a very experience O Dwyers side on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-8.

In our weekend game we were away to a very experienced  St Finians of Newcastle.  We started very well with  2 excellent points from John  Clair one of which was a 45.However we missed 2 good goal chances that would have  put us in a commanding lead .  Finians got the next score  a point and then against the run of play they got their first goal leaving them a point ahead 1-1 to 0-3 after 10 mins. They kicked the next 2 points while Joey Quirke replied with one for BSJ. The next score was a goal for us when the experienced Dermot Kennedy turned over a Fenians ball and delivered to Jack Long who laid off to Joey Quirke to finish beautifully to the net. We went in at HT up by the narrowest of margins 1-4 t01-3

The second half started with 2 quick Fenians points. We scored 3 of the next 4 points with the scores coming from Jack Long , Joey Quirke and a great point from Cian Barry. With the score 1-8 to 1-6 in our favour, again St Finians scored a goal against the run of play. However with a great goal from Andrew O Reilly and points from Joey Quirke, John Clair and Andrew we went 5 points up. With Fenians pushing up hard on our kick outs we were left exposed on a high ball and it resulted in a Finian’s goal. Patrick Coleman came on at midfield and his good fielding gave a supply into the full forward line that  resulted in 2 good points from Fionan Chambers and Joey Quirke to give a lead of 2-17 to 3-10 .  Again back came Finians and in a pulsating last 5 minutes they scored the last 3 points  of the game but just failed to get the equaliser. Final score 2-17 to 3-13.  Both teams must be complemented for an excellent game of football .

Best for BSJ were Kevin Mullderrig, David Murray, John Clair , Naoise Cronin , Jack Long and Joey Quirke.

Next up is a home game V Fingal Ravens on Wednesday 22nd May at 7-15 and then followed by a Saturday match away to Clontarf at 7-30

Junior A : AFL 8

Our mid-week game saw us beat Shankill Gaa at home on a scoreline of 1-12 to 1-6 to bounce us up the table.

For our weekend match we travelled to Pairc Na Uinsionn for a battle with St Vincents.

After a frustrating first half with a lot of wides ,the accuracy and intensity improved in the 2nd half.

We were 6 points down early after the break but went on a good run getting back level before going behind by a point. We soaked up and dealt with a lot of  pressure from St. Vincent’s before we  got a few scores on the break to get to a cushion of a 3 point gap.

Lads kept going throughout the game and good fitness levels told at the end. Final score 0-13 to 1-7.

A great win which puts us in the top 5. However with 16 wides and a missed penalty the  management team of Conor, Frankie and Ronan  will definitely be hoping for less heart stress games going forward. .

Best for BSJ were Sean Burke, Danny Fanning, Matthew Priestley, Matthew Naughton, and Conor Budd.

Next up is a mid week game v Good Counsel in Marlay Pk on Tuesday 21st May , followed by a weekend game V Erin go Bragh away on Sunday morning at 11-00

Junior B: AFL 11

Our mid week game was against St Olafs who conceded .

Unlike most of those who make the journey to the Newland's Cross cemetery the Junior B footballers arrived with high hopes and a spring in their step. St.Kevin's Killian's were struggling for numbers so the game was played with 13 players a side. The early stages of this contest were fairly even as a succession of players conspired to miss chances they'd normally bury. Was the decision to leave many of our best players on the bench about to backfire?

Fortunately our class began to show and stylish points from Rory Kyne, Brian Monahan and Cian Hallinan helped to ensure that the answer to that question was no. Similarly Joey O'Brien and Richard Clune's willingness to attack the ball changed the course of the game. Still it took a late first half DJ Corbett goal reminiscent of Diego Maradona in his Napoli pomp to break the resistance of St. Kevin's Killian's.

The Limerick man went on a mazy solo run from the 45 metre line leaving a series of opponents in his wake before rolling the ball into the net from close range. It may have taken him 5 minutes to get his breath back but it was a goal good enough to grace any stage. The HT score was 1-10 to 0-1

In the second half Billy had a penalty saved but his hard running as well as a smattering of points will have sent his adoring fan club of pupils and colleagues home safe in the knowledge that "Mr Davoren" is pretty decent after all.

The points continued to rack up but a highlight was Daragh Johnston's goal which followed great work by Shane McGonagle.

In the end the scoreline of 3-13 to 0-3 illustrated the gulf between the sides but an improved performance will be required if our unbeaten run is to continue.

So our unbeaten record is still intact after 7 games

Next up is a mid week home game V St James Gaels in Marlay on Thursday 23rd May at 7-15
