Under-20 Football Championship: Caulry 0-16 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-8.

Mullingar Shamrocks dominated the early exchanges and  an early attack finished with Alex Sheerin breaking through on goal and crashing the ball to the net for a superb goal. A brilliant save by goalkeeper Conor Hynes prevented a second goal with Hynes deflecting Conor Heffernan’s shot over the crossbar. Ryan Kelly pointed and after a monumental series of passes Alex Sheerin had a third point for Shamrocks which proved to be Shamrocks’ last before half-time. This score illustrated one of the essential differences between the teams: the laboured build-up of the home team against the more direct play of the visitors. Wind assisted in the opening half Caulry with efforts from Coley Parker, Lee Corcoran and Trevor O’Donovan kept knocking over the points that secured an interval lead of 0-8 to 1-3.

Caulry outscored Shamrocks 0-4 to 0-1 in the opening ten minutes of the second half and extended their lead to an impressive 0-12 to 1-4. Shamrocks rallied and with just a few minutes remaining the sides were level 0-13 to 1-10. A few bad Shamrocks wides didn’t help the cause at this stage. Gavin Pierce with a great goal inspired the comeback; Ryan Kelly kicked three lovely points; a great passing  move with the sides level split the Caulry defence but Gavin Pierce was again foiled by good goalkeeping. Two late frees to Caulry secured the victory with Adam Glynn’s great tackling penalised for the lead point.

This result combined with the draw between Moate All-Whites and St Loman’s sent Mullingar Shamrocks crashing out of the championship.
