U15
Last Monday evening (April 25) Newcastle West shared the points with Dromcollogher Broadford in U15 Football Division 1A. With just the bare 15 players available we had to make some last minute positional switches before throw in. We got off to a great start and took the lead thanks to a sensational long range Paul Logue point. Drom Broadford replied with 3 scores (1-2) in as many minutes. Despite having more possession and scoring chances we trailed 1-4 to 0-4 at half time, the other NCW points coming from Sean Lyons, Sean Fitzgerald and Declan O’Grady. We started strongly in the second half scoring 3 points without reply from Darragh Tierney, Sean Lyons, and Sean Fitzgerald to draw level. Drom pulled 2 points clear again before Sean Lyons slotted home a well taken penalty. Without doubt the move of the match followed starting with Ashton Neville at fullback winning possession to halt a good Drom attack. The ball was quickly moved to Evan Crowley who found Rory Vaughan at half back. Rory took off up the line, ran into trouble but regained possession before a crisp pass released Sean Fitz who raced in on goal. While Sean’s shot was well saved by the keeper – it was a glorious passage of play. We traded points with Drom, Paul Logue and Jack Gallagher putting NCW a point up. Drom pushed hard and were denied by Leon O’Flynn in goals saving from close range. With the last kick of the match Drom drew level to share the points. A great effort from our boys. Well done lads!!
Next up for the U15s is a home match where we welcome Patrickswell to town in U15 Hurling Division 2A Round 3 on Monday May 2nd @ 7pm.
U13
Our Under 13 footballers travelled on Thursday evening to Tullylease to play Dromcollogher Broadford in the first round of the championship. Conditions in the north cork venue were good with a strong breeze blowing across the pitch. Our captain for the day was Kian O Keeffe who along with the rest of the team battled against a very good Dromcollogher Broadford team. This game was a fantastic advert for underage football with great skills on show and a lot of heart and determination shown. Our boys managed the conditions well in the first half, were unlucky to be 4 points down but In the second half we outscored the opposition by 2 points thanks to a great goal from Tiernan Horgan. Final score was DB 2:3 – NCW 1:4. Our next match is home to Cappagh Rathkeale.
In Hurling our Round 2 and 3 matches were refixed and just like busses the two have come at once, away to South Liberties in Dooley Park on Tuesday April 26th and home where we welcome Garryspillane on Wednesday April 27th. Hopefully, we’ll have match reports from a busy hurling week in next weeks notes. Next up is a home match where we welcome Cappagh Rathkeale to town in U13 Football Division 2A Round 2 on Thursday May 5th @ 7pm.
