There are not many people who have their own car parking space in McCann Park, but Pat Sweeney had just that. In her later years Pat could be seen any night of the week watching any football match from the U13’s right up to senior at the gate to the front pitch. It demonstrated the love Pat had for Portarlington GAA club.

Pat's connection to the club was not lifelong given she was born and raised behind enemy lines in Rathleash, Killenard. Her loving husband and proud Portarlington man Joey persuaded Pat to move into town and from then on she never looked back. Pat was a devoted Mother and both Pat and Joey raised their family in Arlington Estate. Historically, The Brigid’s Sq./Arlington estate area was home to many’ s a great Port player and Pat’s family helped continue that tradition. 3 of Pat's children; David, Denise and Joe served the club with distinction for many years. Something which gave Pat immense pride.

Pat would make a massive contribution to the club in her own right. Passionate supporter, committee member and the seller of many many lotto tickets. Pat was also a proud member of a famous band of Portarlington women who fed hundreds of hungry Portarlington and Laois Footballers over the years. In 2003, during his speech on the steps of the hogan stand Ian Fitgerald famously gave a special mention to the 'Ladies of Portarlington GAA Club' for keeping them fed. Port people knew who Ian was referring to that day.

As Portarlington GAA club prepare to say goodbye to another great club person our thoughts are firmly with Pat’s family. Pat will be missed by her beloved husband Joey, sons David and Joe, daughter Denise, brother Christy, sisters Marie, Pauline, Margaret and Catherine and her many friends. One thing Pat loved more than Portarlington GAA club was her grandchildren. Pat will be sadly missed by Cian, Megan, Rachel, John, Adam, and Conor. Pat will now be reunited with her son Declan in heaven where I am sure they will have many a chat about her love for Portarlington GAA club.

Rest in peace Pat.
