Last weekend's Ted Murtagh U15 Hurling Championship clash between Trim and Na Fianna was a tense and dramatic match, heavily influenced by challenging conditions due to Storm Ashley. Na Fianna, benefiting from the strong wind in the first half, built an early lead of 0-7 to 0-0, with Ben Healy’s accuracy from placed balls driving their scoreline. Trim fought back in the second quarter, with Ronan Murray who was putting in a very strong performance, finding the net and Alex Cole adding two points to narrow the gap to 1-2 to 0-10 at halftime.
In the second half, Trim capitalized on the wind advantage, closing in with points from Murray, Conor O'Reilly, and Cole. A game-changing moment came midway through the half when Cormac Walsh assisted Alex Cole, who struck a powerful goal from 30 meters, giving Trim a narrow lead. Cole further extended the advantage with a series of frees, setting up a thrilling final few minutes with Trim holding a two-point edge as time wound down.
The closing quarter of the match was a battle of intense courage and commitment, as both Trim and Na Fianna players pushed themselves to the limit. Trim’s captain, Conor Heffernan, led by example, covering the field tirelessly. A crucial moment came when Na Fianna’s full forward found himself with a potential game-winning shot, only for Heffernan, McMoreland, and O’Donnell to heroically block the attempt, preserving Trim’s narrow lead.
Under constant pressure, Trim’s defense was reinforced by midfielders Oisin Hughes and Cian Hackett, who worked hard to support their backs. Na Fianna’s Ben Healy added his team’s second point of the half with a free, bringing them within a single point of Trim. However, Trim held on, clinching a one-point victory, with a score of 2-7 to 12 much to the delight of their supporters, securing the Ted Murtagh Cup in front of a passionate home crowd. It was a memorable display of skill and resilience from both teams in tough weather conditions.
